Sailor’s Home

Our brief was to create a premium Irish whiskey brand to compete in the crowded premium whiskey category. A flexible masterbrand architecture was required to accommodate new products over time without diluting the core narrative or premium positioning.

Premium whiskey buyers seek authenticity, craft, and story – not just liquid. Limerick’s historic Sailor’s Home building (built in 1856 as a sanctuary for seafarers) provided a rich, ownable heritage: the romance of exploration paired with the emotional pull of homecoming. The key was to make the building’s architecture and seafaring heritage tangible and tactile on shelf, creating immediate visual differentiation in a category dominated by traditional codes.

We created an infinite Sailor’s Home brandmark inspired by the building’s architectural motifs and illustration rooted in the building’s crest (diving helmet, anchor, bird, sextant). On the bottle, shaped to echo the building’s windows, an open doorway at the centre symbolises home with a die cut revealing the liquid as the ultimate reward. A contemporary, non-traditional colour palette differentiates each expression while maintaining masterbrand cohesion through foils, embossments, paper stocks and colour.

Sailor’s Home established as a credible player in the premium Irish whiskey segment with a clear, differentiated positioning built for growth. We built ownable visual equity with authentic storytelling that competitors couldn’t replicate. The architectural inspiration and maritime narrative created immediate shelf standout in a traditional category, while the masterbrand system enabled range expansion without brand dilution.

“Sailor’s Home is a client of True Story’s since 2020 – and consistently delighted by the quality of design work since then. True Story brings together exceptional design capability, deep brand and consumer understanding, strong process, real care for the work. And always a pleasure to work with.”
